As a volunteer, you can help transform Douglas County for the better. Area nonprofits simply don't have the staff or budget to accomplish their sizeable missions to safeguard the health and wellbeing of our county. They rely on a workforce of talented and passionate volunteers.
But the amazing thing about volunteering is, it doesn't just help those who are being served. It has a profound impact on the volunteers themselves. Whether it is important to you to solve a community problem, advance a worthy cause or to develop as a person, volunteering offers many benefits in appreciation for the gift of your time and expertise. Volunteering can help you:
- Make important networking contacts
- Learn or develop skills
- Teach your skills to others
- Enhance your résumé
- Gain work experience
- Build self-esteem and self-confidence
- Improve your health
- Meet new people
- Feel needed and valued
- Express gratitude for help you may have received in the past from an organization
- Communicate to others that you are ambitious, enthusiastic and care about the community
- Make a difference in someone's life

Want to build relationships and have some fun with your group? Volunteering together is perfect for co-workers, service clubs, social clubs, church groups, friends, families and neighbors. Our spring Day of Caring and fall Make a Difference Day are great opportunities for groups seeking to have an impact in our community. We can also help with referrals throughout the year. Call us in advance to discuss your needs and desires. We're happy to help.
When young people are given the opportunity to volunteer and have a positive impact on their environments, they often continue to volunteer throughout their entire life. Young people ages 11 to 18 have a blast while also helping others as part of our Youth Volunteer Corp, which schedules group volunteer projects for tweens and teens throughout the year. We also encourage families with younger children to volunteer together. We have a list of kid-friendly projects.
Do you have special skills and abilities you'd like to use when volunteering? Volunteers fill many different roles at area nonprofits, like providing legal and financial assistance; marketing and fundraising support; IT help and facilities maintenance work.
Area nonprofit organizations also need highly motivated volunteers to serve on their boards of directors. Click here to search board service opportunities and enter information about yourself for upcoming opportunities.
