About Us
History

History

pic23Our center was inspired by the vision of a Douglas County resident who believed that each one of us has the ability to make a difference in our community through volunteering. Roger Hill, a longtime plant manager at Hallmark Cards, Inc., was a strong advocate for community service. Before his death in 1988, Roger was working to establish a central clearinghouse that would connect volunteers with opportunities to serve in the community. Thanks to Roger's dream, the generous support of Hallmark Cards and the initiative of the United Way of Douglas County, the United Way Roger Hill Volunteer Center opened on April 28, 1990.

Every year, the center helps hundreds of volunteers find meaningful ways to use their time and talents to make Douglas County a better place, providing more than 100 nonprofit organizations with the volunteer workforce they need to accomplish their missions.

What We Do

picThe United Way Roger Hill Volunteer Center works to foster positive change in our community through volunteerism. We:

Encourage people to make a difference by volunteering. We implement a variety of strategies to actively recruit volunteers of all ages and from all walks of life to serve in Douglas County.

Link volunteers with meaningful opportunities to serve. Our center acts as a clearinghouse for the volunteer needs and opportunities available in Douglas County. Individuals or groups who want to volunteer can access our searchable database or work directly with our staff to find opportunities to serve.

Assist nonprofit agencies in promoting their volunteer opportunities in the community. When area nonprofit agencies, schools, government entities, and facilities serving the elderly and other vulnerable populations have a need for volunteer support, we are here to help them find the right people for the job. We not only actively recruit volunteers for area nonprofits, we also help promote nonprofits' urgent needs and upcoming events within the community.

Support nonprofits in the development of volunteer programs. Our staff provides nonprofits with the support they need to develop, train and retain valuable volunteers.

Organize communitywide days of service. Hundreds of people participate each year in our spring Day of Caring and fall Make a Difference Day. During these large-scale, communitywide events, families, individuals, civic and religious organizations and businesses come together to help area agencies with one-time project needs.

Participate in special volunteer projects and events. We promote volunteerism throughout the year by participating in special events like the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, National Day of Service and Remembrance, Family Volunteer Day, Emergency Management Preparedness Fair and Kids Voting.

Applaud volunteers who make a difference. We take the lead in recognizing volunteer service in Douglas County through annual events and activities.

Provide special service opportunities for youth. Our Youth Volunteer Corps, open to 11 to 18 year-olds, is active year round in service projects. Teens and tweens work together on meaningful but age-appropriate projects, having fun as they make a difference in their communities.
